Why plugin count is only an indicator, what to review and how to remove unused code safely.
Why this check matters
There is no universal safe plugin number. The useful question is which plugins run work on each request, overlap in purpose or remain active without an owner.
How to review it
- List active plugins and record the job each one performs.
- Remove duplicates and inactive features with a tested rollback.
- Check front-end assets and scheduled tasks, not just the count.
- Retest forms, editor features and integrations after cleanup.
Keep the change safe
Deactivate before deleting and keep a backup. A small plugin can still be expensive, while a well-built larger plugin may be harmless.
How WPVitals uses this signal
WPVitals checks this setting locally and reports the result in the WordPress dashboard. The check is a maintenance signal, so review the site context before changing a setting and test the visitor experience afterwards.
